Pet Smart’s Legal Woes Continue

Last September, the De La Garza family bought a cockatiel from Pet Smart. Unfortunately, the pet was contaminated with the bacterium chlamydophila psittaci. This causes psittacosis, AKA parrot fever. Joe De La Garza died, and his daughter became very ill but has recovered. Now the family is after Pet Smart for negligence.

It was reported in Minnesota last month, but the problem with PetSmart’s bird has taken on a wider scope. Arizona based PetSmart has suspended selling birds in about three fourths of their approximately 1000 locations in North America. They have tracked the problem to an un-named vendor source in Florida. There are still no reported human infections thankfully.

If you live in Minnesota and bought cockatiels or parakeets PetSmart after October 1, 2007, there is a health warning for you! Minnesota health officials warned that the birds could be infected with the bacteria that causes psittacosis (pronounced: sitta-KOH-sis). There has been no illness has been reported among bird owners so far.
