Squirrels - the bane of backyard bird lovers. These clever little creatures spend most of their waking hours looking for food and this often brings them to the backyard birdfeeder. They share a love for many of the same foods that birds like to eat - seed and suet based feed. They don't realize the food isn't placed there for them - they're merely doing what comes natural to them.
Many models of squirrel resistant bird feeders are available. Unfortunately, just because a bird feeder has been designed to keep squirrels away, doesn't mean they won't try. Squirrels are persistent little creatures and will keep trying to access the feeder. In fact, a squirrel may visit a squirrel resistant bird feeder for many weeks before it finally gives it up as a lost cause. Unfortunately, as long as there is one or more squirrels hanging around your bird feeder (even if only trying to access the food), you will not have birds at your feeder.
The best way to keep squirrels out of your bird feeder is to give them their own feeder. As long as you keep their feeder well stocked with squirrel goodies, they will not be interested in your bird feeder. Also, be sure to locate the squirrel feeder a good distance from the bird feeder.
Then you can let your bird feeder serve the creatures it was meant for: your backyard bird visitors.
