What is the right birdhouse for your backyard birding experiences? There is no one answer to that. The bird house you choose for your backyard birding may vary and there are several points to consider.
Size - Different kinds of birds need different sizes of bird houses.
Depending on the kinds of birds you want to have in your yard, you will want to make sure the house is large enough to accommodate them, but compact enough for their nesting needs.
The right size is just big enough for the adult bird and her nest. Research the types of birds in your area and determine their full size. Determine the size of the bird house from this research and be sure the opening is large enough to admit an adult bird.
Ventilation - Make sure the bird house is well ventilated. It is important that the house not allow heat build up in the warm months.
Access - The interior of the bird house should be easily accessible so that you can inspect and clean the house. This is usually accomplished by having one side of the bird house that is hinged to open.
Material Used - The bid house should be constructed with non-toxic material, usually unpainted wood. If the birdhouse is painted, the paint used should be non-toxic.
Entrance - The entrance access should be shaded by a roof extension which helps keep out the weather. The house should not have perches that extend outside the entrance hole. These types of perches will endanger the birds.
Spend a little time considering the birds that visit your area and you'll be rewarded with flocks of beautiful birds in your yard.
