Backyard birds make wonderful subjects for both amateur and professional photographers. With their dazzling array of colors, graceful flight, and charming behavior, they are rewarding and pleasurable to capture in photographs. Along with a bird watching journal, they can record in detail your bird watching activities. Having a bird feeder or a bird bath are great ways to attract a wide variety of birds to your own backyard. These are both places where birds will congregate and spend some time in the open so that you can photograph them.
First of all, you will need a fairly powerful telephoto lens for your camera. For bird photography, you'll want a lens in the 500mm to 600mm range. You will not be able to get too close to the birds without scaring them off or upsetting them. Therefore, you'll need a lens that has the ability to capture the detail from a distance of at least 30 feet. Cameras and lenses are beyond the scope of this article, but if you're shopping for camera or lens equipment, be sure to tell the camera store sales representative that bird photography will be part of your desired use for the equipment.
Secondly, you'll need lots of patience and you'll need to ability to remain still for relatively long periods of time. Birds are frightened off by even the smallest sudden movement and you will need to remain quiet and stationary. Taking photos of birds from inside your vehicle is good cover tactic and helps eliminate the problem of needing to remain stationary for long periods of time.
With the right photography equipment and some persistence, you can fill your bird watching journal with colorful photographs of picturesque birds and enjoy them for many years to come.
